DescriptionThis quilt is classified as a heritage quilt made by a Black Arkansas quilter. The pattern is categorized as a “Snowball” or “Snowflake” pattern quilt. The quilt pattern is also referenced as the “Four Points” pattern. The artist made this as utilitarian quilt and was used in the home for decoration and warmth. The quilt was constructed around c.1950 but fabrics used were scraps from older clothing and materials from around c.1940. The artist creates interesting sashing between the pieced in varying widths and lengths. The finished piece exhibits formal methods of quilting as well as informal, as seen by the juxtaposition of dark nearly black strips of fabric with lighter, softer, tones. The contrast creates a pronounced focal point and added interest to the work. The artist traded patterns with fellow quilters and cut out patterns from newspapers. A similar pattern was published in 1935 in the Kansas City Star News as the “Arkansas Snowflake.”

Snowflake/Four Point pattern quilt. 12" blocks, 3-4 stitches per inch, utilitarian quilting, binding back to front on 3 sides, 4th is tucked, medium to thick batting, multi pieced back.

    Made by Hattie Williams Jones.
