DescriptionMagazine advertisement for the movie "Two Years Before the Mast," starring Hot Springs native Alan Ladd. The movie is a 1946 adventure film based on Richard Henry Dana’s novel of the same name. The film was produced by Paramount Pictures.

Alan Ladd was born September 3, 1913, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and lived in Arkansas until around the age of five. He was an actor who appeared in over 80 films and was one of the most recognizable celebrities of the 1940s and '50s. He starred in such films as "Two Years before the Mast," "The Blue Dahlia," and "The Great Gatsby." However, Ladd is perhaps best known for his role in the 1953 western movie "Shane." Ladd died on January 29, 1964.

The film also stars Brian Donlevy, William Bendix, Howard Da Silva, and Esther Fernández. Ladd plays the lead character of Charles Stewart. The ad is white with red and black print. It shows a shirtless Ladd holding a gun in his right hand and a rope in the other. It also features a drawing of the actors in their screen roles. A caption, appearing on the front of a book, reads "4 Great Stars in the most exciting romantic sea saga ever screened! (In smaller print) Thirsting for adventure. red blooded mutineers surge from the pages of the world's best loved story of the seven seas." Ladd had to miss a few weeks of filming due to an injury he sustained on the set.
