DescriptionCivil War Presentation Sword and fragment of black leather scabbard. The sword was most likely made in Austria or Germany. The inscription on the hilt is original and reads, "Presented to the Boys of Co. K 37th IL vols to ADJt Wm. M. Bandy for Gallant & Meritorious Action on the Bloody Field of Pea Ridge, Dieu Vous Garde." Due to the condition of the sword, it could be concluded that this sword was recoved at a battlefield and was actually used by a Confederderate combatant.

William M. Bandy was born in Illinois and was the editor of "The Post" newspaper in Danville, Illinois before the Civil War. During the Civil War, he fought at Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove and Vicksburg and was eventually stationed in Little Rock. His name is listed on the Illinois memorial at Vicksburg. His home was at 55 E. North St. in Danville.

Bandy is mentioned in numerous letters in "Duty, honor, and country: the Civil War experiences of Captain William P. Black " by: Michael E. Banasik. The presentation of his sword is mentioned in: "The Freemont Rifles: A History of the 37th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry" by Michael A. Mullins
