William M. Bandy was born in Illinois and was the editor of "The Post" newspaper in Danville, Illinois before the Civil War. During the Civil War, he fought at Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove and Vicksburg and was eventually stationed in Little Rock. His name is listed on the Illinois memorial at Vicksburg. His home was at 55 E. North St. in Danville.
Bandy is mentioned in numerous letters in "Duty, honor, and country: the Civil War experiences of Captain William P. Black " by: Michael E. Banasik. The presentation of his sword is mentioned in: "The Freemont Rifles: A History of the 37th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry" by Michael A. Mullins
