DescriptionPreviously thought to be a "Bars Design," this miniature quilt is known as a "Shadow Quilt" or "Roman Stripes" patterned quilt. This piece has a black back piece and border with a red 1/2" border surrounding the center motif. The center block is a series of 16 individually pieced blocks. The individual blocks are organized in the same pattern and in the same direction with the sequence of black, red, green, blue and a deeper red stripes. The miniature quilt has been machine and hand pieced and hand quilted using black thread.

Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brachman places this pattern in the two-patch category. This design is known as a "Shadow Quilt" or sometimes "Roman Stripes" pattern #3153
