DescriptionDVD case for the movie "The Town that Dreaded Sundown." The film was loosely based on the Phantom Killer, who terrorized Texarkana, Arkansas, during the 1940s.The Phantom Killer was an unidentified serial killer believed to have committed a number of murders--possibly killing as many as six people--in Texarkana between February 23 and May 4, 1946. The cover features an image of a man wearing a white bag with eye slots cut out, which is reportedly what the Phantom Killer wore, according to two surviving victims. There was a prime suspect; however, the case has never been solved. The movie was released in 1976.

The film was directed and produced by Charles B. Pierce (1938-2010), a producer, director, and actor. Although born in Indinia, Pierce's family moved to Texarkana, Arkansas, right after he was born. Pierce made a number of movies about the South during his career, including "Bootleggers," a film about moonshiners in the Ozark Mountains.
