Bonds were sold by the United States government during WWII as a way to finance the war. Citizens would by the bonds, which loaned the money to the government, and the government would repay them at a later date.
Joseph Hirsch was born on April 25, 1910 in Philadelphia. He began his art education at seventeen years old at the Philadelphia Museum and continued with formal studies alongside artists and international travel. After the Depression, Hirsch worked in the easel painting division of the Works Project Administration (WPA) which led to his next step in becoming an artist war correspondent during WWII for the U.S. government. Hirsch passed away on September 21, 1981 in New York City.
