DescriptionA WWII military rucksack belonging to William H. Maack. The rucksack is army green with wear marks and stains, and a handle that continues into a shoulder strap. There are metal holes that appear to have been used to close the rucksack. Maack's name is printed in capital black letters underneath the handle. Maack's army serial number "18137217" is printed below his name, and "43112" is printed underneath the first set of numbers. "0246US." is printed half in black and the other half in white near the bottom of the rucksack. "BK 7403-HH" is printed in white underneath the former.

William H. Maack was born on December 7, 1920 in Little Rock, AR. He graduated from Little Rock High School in 1936 and joined the Little Rock Police Department in January of 1942. He served as a patrolman before he joined the U.S. Army in September of 1942. Maack was assigned to the 505th Ordnance Company and was deployed to England in December of 1943. In 1944, the 505th Ordnance Company was a part of the D-Day invasion, landing on Omaha Beach. Later that same year he was a part of the Ardennes Campaign also known as the Battle of the Bulge. Maack was awarded five Bronze Service Stars for his participation at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and the Good Conduct Medal in 1945. Maack was honorably discharged from the army in November of 1945. After leaving the army, Maack returned to the Little Rock Police Department in 1947.
