DescriptionArkansas Civil War bond for $5 made out to E.W. Gantt. Serial No. 26985. Signed by O. Basham and W.R. Miller.E.W. Gantt raised the 12 Arkansas Infantry and served first as a colonel then as a brigadier general during the war. After an attack on Fort Thompson on the Mississippi where Gantt was garrisoned in 1862, he surrendered to the Union Army. He was exchanged four months later and Gantt returned to Arkansas. In the fall of 1863, Gantt switched sides and became a Union loyalist. After the war, he worked as a lawyer and was a state prosecuter during Reconstruction. He was also a supervisor of the Freedman's Bureau. In 1873, he began work on a digest of Arkansas' state laws per the Governor. Gantt died June 10, 1874 in Little Rock and is buried in Tulip, Dallas County.
