DescriptionAddress by Brig. Gen. E.W. Gantt. Written by Gantt while he was a prisoner of war. Gantt supported secession and became the colonel of the Twelfth Arkansas Infantry Regiment, mustering around Arkadelphia (Clark County). Following his surrender near New Madrid, Missouri, Gantt was imprisoned at Fort Warren, Massachusetts where he stayed until his negotiated release in August 1862. Confederate leaders did not offer Gantt another leadership role after his imprisonment, and he surrendered to General Grant in 1863. After changing sides, he was used to boost morale for northern soldiers for the rest of the war.
