The letter tells the Commanding Officer at Elk Horn to immediatly move all of his force to Fayetteville, minus enough men to guard the post at Elk Horn, to attack a rebel force 25,000 strong in Fayetteville in the next 48 hours. He is to report by messenger to Blount as soon as he arrives.

You will immediately move all your available force to Fayetteville leaving sufficient force to guard the post at Elkhorn. Upon your arrival at that place, you will send a strong reconnoitering party down the Wire Road. I am expecting an attack from the entire rebel force 25,000 strong during the next 48 hours. You will report to me by messenger the time you can be at Fayetteville
