DescriptionA World War II military helmet worn by Sid McMath in the Pacific theater. The helmet features a green exterior shell and alternating dark and light brown straps from side to side in the interior. Governor McMath wore the helmet during the D-Day Landing.

Sidney “Sid” Sanders McMath was born June 14, 1912 in Columbia County, Arkansas. In the summer of 1936 Sid graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville with an LLB and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines. From August of 1936 to March 1937, McMath was on a tour of duty. In 1940, McMath returned to active service and was assigned as an instructor in the Office Candidate School in Quantico, VA and was soon promoted to first lieutenant. McMath went on to his assignment at Camp Lejeune, NC as an operations and training officer with the Third Marine Regiment and was deployed to America Samoa shortly thereafter. McMath’s success at the Battle of Piva Forks won him the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star, and promotion to lieutenant colonel. In 1944, McMath was assigned to marine headquarters in Washington, D.C. In December 1945, McMath was no longer on active duty and took reserve status with the Eighth Marine Regiment based in New Orleans, LA.
