Prohibition in the United States was a national ban on the sale, production and transportation of alcohol, enacted thru the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the Volstead Act that was in effect from 1919 to 1933. Anti-prohibitionists, or “wets,” criticized the movement as an intrusion of mainly rural Protestant ideals on a central aspect of urban, immigrant and Catholic customs. Because of the vast formation of criminal organizations and rampant corruption among politician and police forces that were offset by the 18th Amendment, the Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment, on December 5, 1933.
