DescriptionSword conforms in general to the U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry sabre, curved blade. The crude construction indicates Confederate manufacture, brass pommel and guard. Wrapped wire over and leather over wood handle, painted black.

The U.S. Model 1840 sabre was fashioned after the 1822 French hussar's sword. It was made to be used as a slashing sword and was nicknamed "Old Wristbreaker". It was used by U.S. Cavalry during the Mexican War.

This sword is Civil War era.
