A black case with cracked leather, exposed wood, and blue lining is associated with this sword and scabbard, having been stored together prior to their accession.
Edward F. Webster was born April 24, 1840 in Ohio. He entered service as a private in Co. H of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on Sept. 3, 1861 and was mustered in as a Corporal on Sept. 9th. His regiment organized in Cleveland at Camp Denison. He later transferred to the 25th Independent Ohio Battery. He was captured twice during the war - once at Ft. Gibson and once at Little Rock. He was a chief ordinance officer of the Dept. of Arkansas under Maj. Gen. J.J. Reynolds. He closed the war as a 1st Lieutenant and was discharged from service on December 2, 1865. After the war, he was a member of the G.A.R., Hamlin Post. He participated annually in Decoration Day. Webster died on Feb. 13, 1928 in Ohio and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Wellington, Ohio.
