DescriptionThe gown that was worn by Mary Eagle in 1889 during her husband, James Philip Eagle's, inauguration as the sixteenth Governor of Arkansas. Mary Eagle wore this two-piece dress with a fitted bodice, a low neckline, and standing collar that extends down the center of the back into a V-shape yoke. The bodice and skirt are made of pink silk brocade with fine white stripes. The inset of the dress is made of cotton lace that is pink with stripes and flowers. The pink silk crepe is shirred along the shoulder seam in the front and along a seam above the bust level. The lowered waistline has a self-trim of pink silk crepe with rosebuds. The sleeves are Juliet-style with the puffs at the top shirred vertically while three small rosebuds are nestled down the center of each sleeve puff. Pink rosebuds accent the collar and waist at the center front and center back. The gored skirt with a full back is floor length and falls from the natural waistline, giving the dress an hour-glass silhouette. Mary Eagle's inaugural gown came from Madame Reimer of Louisville, Kentucky.
