DescriptionA plaque from the Arkansas River Hall of Fame given to former Arkansas Senator John McClellan in 1992. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor those persons who have performed significant and outstanding service in the development of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. The Hall of Fame is a tribute to the perseverance individuals who refused to abandon their belief that navigation on the Arkansas River was feasible. Nominees are recommended to the Society's Board by its Hall of Fame Committee, and the Board of Directors selects four honorees each year.

John Little McClellan was born on February 25, 1896 on a farm near Sheridan, Arkansas. McClellan is most widely known for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, a project which illustrates his firm belief that large federal projects would boost Arkansas’s prosperity and his dedication to cultivating opportunity and progress in Arkansas and the Southwest. In 1934, McClellan was elected to the United States Congress and served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from the Sixth Congressional District of Arkansas (1935-1938). McClellan was elected to the United States Senate in 1942 and served until his death in 1977, representing the people of Arkansas in the Senate longer than anyone in state history. He passed away on November 28, 1977.
