John Little McClellan was born on February 25, 1896 on a farm near Sheridan, Arkansas. McClellan is most widely known for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, a project which illustrates his firm belief that large federal projects would boost Arkansas’s prosperity and his dedication to cultivating opportunity and progress in Arkansas and the Southwest. In 1934, McClellan was elected to the United States Congress and served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from the Sixth Congressional District of Arkansas (1935-1938). McClellan was elected to the United States Senate in 1942 and served until his death in 1977, representing the people of Arkansas in the Senate longer than anyone in state history. He passed away on November 28, 1977.
