DescriptionA black and white photograph of Winthrop Rockefeller, Sr. This photograph was taken on February 29, 1964. After preparing to run for governor in Arkansas for ten years, it appeared that Rockefeller would finally be ready to announce his candidacy. Rockefeller is sitting behind a desk in an office chair. He is speaking to someone outside of the photograph and gesturing with his hands. It is an Associated Press Wirephoto.

Winthrop Rockefeller was born on May 1, 1912 in New York City, New York. His grandfather, John D. Rockefeller, was the founder of Standard Oil Company. Rockefeller moved to Morrilton, Arkansas in 1953, founding Winrock Farms and entering into state politics shortly thereafter. In 1955, Governor Orval Faubus named Rockefeller to the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission. Rockefeller lost the 1964 Governor's election to Faubus before becoming the thirty-seventh governor of Arkansas in 1967. He was reelected in 1969. Rockefeller died of pancreatic cancer on February 22, 1973, in Palm Springs, California.
