Rockefeller moved to Morrilton, Arkansas in 1953, founding Winrock Farms and entering into state politics shortly thereafter. In 1955, Governor Orval Faubus named Rockefeller to the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission. Rockefeller lost the 1964 Governor's election to Faubus before becoming the thirty-seventh governor of Arkansas in 1967. He was reelected in 1969. Rockefeller died of pancreatic cancer on February 22, 1973, in Palm Springs, California.
