    DescriptionA paper doll produced by The Pope Manufacturing Company advertising the Model 41 and Model 42 Columbia Bicycles for women's use. The Pope Manufacturing Company was the leader in United States bicycle production from 1878-1896. The front of the advertisement is an illustration of a woman in Victorian dress standing next to a bicycle. Inside of the card is another advertisement for a woman's bicycle costume. Text states:

    "Bicycle Costume designed for the Pope Manufacturing Co. makers of Columbia Bicycles by Redfern New York and London. An extremely smart costume, consisting of short skirt, worn over knickerbockers of the same material, and waist with vest of red cloth and gold buttons under front of light box cloth. Leggings of box cloth. Alpine hat. The material recommended by Redfern is a rich open tweed."

    "This Doll represents a Bicycling Costume especially designed for the Pope Manufacturing Co. Hartford, Conn. by Redfern New York and London and is one of a series of six similar dolls showing designs by Redfern and other noted makers of costumes for women's wear. The series will be of great value in deciding the appropriate dress for use awheel, at the same time delighting the hearts of all the children into whose hands they may come. The set of six dolls will be mailed to any address for five 2-cent stamps. Address, Publishing Department, POPE MFG. COMPANY, Hartford, Conn."

    "Columbia Bicycles for Woman's Use are lighter, more attractive and graceful, and better adapted to individual requirements, than any bicycles yet produced. The Columbia Model 41 weighs but 21 1/2 pounds, while the special 26-inch Columbia Model 42, with diamond frame, to be used with zouave or knickerbocker costume, weights but 18 pounds. Their price is $100. Full description and information concerning these matchless bicycles, and Hartford bicycles, lower-priced wheels for both men's and women's use, are contained in the Columbia Catalogue, a work of art that can be had free from any Columbia Agent, or will be mailed for two 2-cent stamps.
