DescriptionA portrait of Capt. James Monroe Stevens. Biographical information on plate on bottom of the frame. "Commander of Co. E, 3rd Arkansas Infantry Regt. Born 1832 in Georgia and died June 22, 1898 in Arkansas.

Stevens enlisted at Champagnolle, Arkansas on June 20, 1861. He was promoted fives times during the war:
1. second sergeant, July 13, 1861
2. third lieutenant, April 10, 1862
3. second lieutenant, April 28, 1862
4. first lieutenant, May 28, 1862
5. captain, June 20, 1863
He was arrested August 4, 1863 and resigned October 13, 1863.

His brother, Thomas J. Stevens, was killed at Gettysburg.

After the war, James lived in Union Co., Arkansas and worked as a farmer.

B. Oval matting. Dimensions 15.5" x 12.5". Original shadowbox frame, ornately carved. Brown and black in color. Dimensions 23.75" x 21".
