DescriptionAlbumen photograph of General Meriwether Jeff Thompson. Thompson was born on January 22, 1826 in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Before the Civil War, he was the mayor of St. Joseph, Missouri and presided over the first ride of the Pony Express in 1860.

During the war, he was a brigadier general in the Missouri State Guard. His battalion was known at the Swamp Rats because of the area they covered - the southeastern section of Missouri near the Mississippi River. He was personally known as the Missouri Swamp Fox.

He had the distinction of having a Confederate Naval ship named after him.
