DescriptionFire insurance plaque. This plaque is from the Associated Fireman’s Insurance Company
These plaques were often lead or copper and were embossed with the insurance company's sign. The owner of buildings would pay fire brigades for protection and would receive these plaques to hang on the outside of their buildings as a way to guide that insurance company's fire brigade. Payments made by the insured would help financially support the brigade. They were used on the nineteenth century in the days before municipal fire services were formed

Oval. Image of a man wearing a black top hat, red jacket, blue pants and black shoes. In his right hand is a gold bugle with a red banner. He is standing on green grass. On the back of the plaque are "V" and "M".
