The photograph shows a group of men surrounding two men kneeling beside a grave marker. Parts of the photograph have been tinted.

The grave is for John D. Townsend, who died on Feb. 17, 1890. Townsend served in Co. B of 17th (Lemoyne's) Arkansas Infantry.
