DescriptionConfederate veteran's hat. Manufactured by the John B. Stetson Co. and counterstamped by the seller: "Southcomb, Baltimore". There is a pen inscription inside the sweatband, "R.N. Crowell, Ark." Gold bullion cord and a metal "U.C.V." wreath on the hat.

R.N. Crowell served in the 48th Virginia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. He enlisted in Washington Co., Virginia as a private on June 18, 1861 at the age of 19. H mustered into Co. I, VA 48th Infantry. He was listed as AWOL on April 30, 1862 and was discharged on March 1, 1863. He relocated to Arkansas after the Civil War and was a resident of the Confederate Home in Sweet Home. Crowell died in 1936 and is buried at the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
