DescriptionHandwritten Oath of Allegiance. Written in the field in Hempstead County, Arkansas. The document contains 27 names, front and back. All 27 were Confederate soldiers from Arkansas. Most of the mean served in Dawson's-Hardy's Infantry Regiment. They surrendered and were paroled in Shreveport, Louisiana with Gen. E. Kirby Smith's Army of the Trans-Mississippi on May 26, 1864. Upon release, these men walked home. The allegiance was signed on June 27, 1865.Written in ink on lined paper. Names written on back are in pencil.
