    DescriptionCarte de visite of George W. Burchard, Major, 54th U.S. Colored Infantry. Burchard had previously served with the 29th Wisconsin Infantry. Burchard was a lawyer and newspaper man prior to his army service. After the war Burchard would become Adjutant General for the state of Wisconsin.

    The 54th U.S Colored Infantry was organized in Helena, March 11, 1864, from 2nd Arkansas Infantry (African Descent). Attached to 2nd Brigade, Frontier Division, 7th Corps, Dept. of Arkansas

    Rectangular piece of light brown card stock paper with a smaller rectangular image adhered to the front. Written on back: "Very lucky. Your friend George Burchard Major 5th U.S. Col'd Infy and [?]"
