In 2008 the film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.“A Face in the Crowd” was written by Budd Schulberg and was based on his short story "Your Arkansas Traveler." The story centers on a drifter named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes, who is discovered by the producer (Neal) of a small-market radio program in rural northeast Arkansas. Rhodes gains celebrity as a singer and becomes drunk with power. The movie takes place in a fictional Arkansas town called Pickett and was filmed in Piggott (Clay County), Arkansas and Paragould (Greene County), Arkansas.
