DescriptionOil portrait of Matilda Williams Johnson (1793-1874) wife of United States District Judge Benjamin Johnson (1784-1849) who served in the Old State House building from 1836 until his death in 1849. Matilda is the maternal grandmother of Maude Jordan (2008.174.01). Matilda is dressed in morning in a black dress with diagonal pleats around the chest. She has a lace collar and a black satin with white lace shawl surrounds her shoulders.This portrait was painted after the death of her husband, Judge Benjamin Johnson.
