Dale Leon Bumpers was born on August 12, 1925 in Charleston, Arkansas. He married longtime girlfriend Betty Lou Flanagan on September 4, 1949. In 1970, Bumpers ran for Governor of Arkansas and won, becoming the thirty-eighth governor of Arkansas. He was reelected in 1972 and died on January 1, 2016.
Betty Bumpers was the thirty-fifth First Lady of Arkansas (1971-1975). Her “Every Child in ‘74” was implemented in 1972, to have every child in the state immunized against childhood diseases.
