DescriptionAmbrotype of Van Manning and his wife, Mary Wallace Manning. Van Manning (1839-1892) helped organization two companies in his hometown of Hamburg, Ashley County, He served with the 3rd Arkansas Infantry He enlisted as a Captain and ended the war as a Colonel. He fought at Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Gettysburg. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and captured. He remained in Federal prisons until his release July 21, 1865.

The woman's has dark hair that is pulled back neatly and has a bow or scarf in back. The image is stored under glass with gilt border. The case has blue velvet lining and is split along the hinged binding. The exterior of the case is covered in leather embossed with floral acanthus leaf designs, typical of the Victorian period.

The ambrotype is a type of photograph that uses a glass negative with a black background making the image appear positive. Popular during the 1850's and 1860's. Patented by James Ambrose Cutting.
