DescriptionAmbrotype of brothers, Captain Charles Lawson Moore and Sargent Robert Caswell Moore. The Moore brothers were from Helena, Arkansas.

Charles was an original member of the Yell Rifles which was originally commanded by Patrick Cleburne. The unit eventually became Co. C, 15th Arkansas Infantry. Charles enrolled as a first Sargent on April 18, 1861 and mustered into service at Camp Yell, Pitman's Ferry, Arkansas on July 23, 1861. Between his enrollment and mustering into service, he was promoted to junior second lieutenant. He was appointed Captain and Assistant Quartermaster in May of 1862. On February 25, 1864, he was captured in Monroe County and sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio. Charles was paroled on Jan. 9, 1865 and exchanged at Red River Landing, Louisiana. He served the rest of the war as an appointed Quartermaster on General James C. Tappan's staff.

Robert enlisted in the 13th Arkansas Regiment. As a lieutenant, he fought at the Battles of Belmont, Shiloh, Woodsville, Perryville, Chickamauga, Vicksburg, Dalton, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Allatoona and Franklin. Robert was one of the few men from Helena to survive the war.

During the Battle of Stone's River in December, 1862, the 13th and 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiments were field consolidated, reuniting the two brothers.

The ambrotype is a type of photograph that uses a glass negative with a black background making the image appear positive. Popular during the 1850's and 1860's. Patented by James Ambrose Cutting.

The dark brown case has a floral motif. In the ambrotype, the two brothers are seated and are both in Confederate uniforms. One brother has his arm around the other.
