DescriptionAmbrotype of Confederate Colonel Van Manning. The oval image depicts a man dressed in military uniform from the waist up. The ambrotype is housed in a hinged wooden case, covered in dark leather embossed with a Victorian design. The interior is lined with reddish-orange velvet.

The ambrotype is a type of photograph that uses a glass negative with a black background making the image appears positive. Popular during the 1850's and 1860's. Patented by James Ambrose Cutting.
