DescriptionWooden, stained and sealed canteen with metal banding around circumference. Leather strap. Carving on both sides, "J.T. Carter," on one side, "E.B.G., Lt. Col. 28th Wis. Vol." on the other.

E.B.G. refers to Edmund B. Gray, at one time the commanding officer for the 28th Wisconsin Infantry. The 28th Wisconsin fought at Helena, Mark's Mills, and Mount Elba. Gray later served as a national officer in the Grand Army of the Republic.

This style of wooden canteen was commonly used by many Confederate soldiers. This canteen is a battlefield pickup, as it would never have been issued to Union soldiers.

We believe this canteen was originally owned by J.T. Carter, a private with the 32nd Arkansas Infantry. Carter was killed during the Battle of Helena, where Edmund Gray also fought.
