Rosa Zagnoni Marinoni (1888-1970) was poet laureate of Arkansas from 1953 to 1970. She supported young and new writers, helping to establish the University-City Poetry Club in 1926, at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She was the founder of the northwest Arkansas affiliate of the National League of American Pen Women and worked with the Arkansas Federation of Women’s Clubs to promote poetry. In honor of her contribution to writing, Governor Ben Laney proclaimed October 15, 1948 as the first annual Poetry Day in Arkansas. In 1969, Governor Winthrop Rockefeller proclaimed said date to be observed in Arkansas as Rosa Z. Marinoni Day.
