DescriptionA Pearlware ceramic serving platter. The platter is rectangular with eight sides, white with a blue shell-edged pattern, and has a Davenport mark pressed at the bottom. The serving platter is an example of refined earthenware. The glaze is clear lead-fluxed with a slight blue tint. The glaze on Pearlware appears blue in crevices of vessels where the glaze thickens. This is particularly evident in the standing rings of plates, cups, and saucers, and at the point of handle attachments.
Decorations include molded vessel rims, hand painting, and transfer-printing. The earliest Pearlwares were made beginning in 1780. These particular examples, called blue shell edge, date back to 1780-1830.
