He served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1985 until 1997, and as a United States Senator from 1997 until 2002. He is a member of the Republican Party and has a history of voting strongly conservative. He served on the Armed Services Committee, Aging Committee, Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and Veterans' Affairs Committee.
