Claude King was not a native Arkansan but his 1962 hit song, "Wolverton Mountain" is based on a real person and place in Arkansas. Wolverton Mountain is located a few miles north of Morrilton, in Conway County, Arkansas, but is spelled Woolverton Mountain. Clifton Clowers actually lived there and had 2 daughters. This collection is of Claude King contracts and documents. The documents include contacts produced by Gene Williams Enterprises, his agent, and performance locations, flyers and a few itineraries and payment ledgers.
a. Yellow Flyer advertising Claude King and the Wolverton Mountain Express's appearance. The date and time are blank. The second page is an account ledger from Gene Williams Enterprises dated March 29, 1983. Dates of shows are listed with Claude King’s Gross pay, Gene Williams’ percentage and Commission. The ledger is on Gene Williams Enterprises letterhead. The third page is a photocopy of an article on Gene Williams from the Arkansas Democrat dated December 27, 1981. The article written by Jack Hill discusses the film locations chosen for King's movie based on his song, "Wolverton Mountain." The sites chosen for the movie were Clinton, Melbourne and Mountain View. Apparently the movie was never made or released. The fourth and fifth pages are his itinerary.
b. Accounting ledger from Gene Williams Enterprises, Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas dated March 3, 1983. 1983. Dates of shows are listed with Claude King’s Gross pay, Gene William’s percentage and Commission. The ledger is on Gene Williams Enterprises letterhead. The second and third pages are King's itinerary.
C. A photocopy of an article in the November 7, 1982 Arkansas Democrat article which states the movie Wolverton Mountain is "still in the works." The location of the movie moved to the Morrilton area. The second and third pages are regarding a PR request from Betty Mann needing glossy photograph prints instead of screened prints. The fourth page is King's June Itinerary.
D. A flyer green in color for an all call cast for the movie "Wolverton Mountain." "All shooting will be done on location in North Central Arkansas." Hillbillies are depicted on the flyer. The next two documents are photocopies of checks made out to Gene Williams from the Wagon Wheel club in Goldsboro NC. The other copy of the check is made out to Gene Williams Company. The fourth page is King's July itinerary.
E. August and September Kings Itineraries and a check stub for $2,250.00
F, A letter from Gene Williams House of Talent moving King's appearance date from March 7 to June 26 at the
Radar Club in North Charleston, SC.
G. contract for King to play at the Navel Weapons Station in Charleston S.C. dated January 7, 1983 performance fee $650.00.

Claude King (1923-2013) was an American country music singer and songwriter, best known for his 1962 song “Wolverton Mountain”, a million selling hit based on a real person that lived on Wolverton Mountain north of Morrilton, Arkansas. In 1981, Arkansas Governor Frank D. White paid tribute to King by declaring August 7 “Wolverton Mountain Day”.
