DescriptionA blue pin tie that belonged to Sid McMath. The tie pin is from McMath's fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣΑΕ), its chapter's name, Phi Alpha (ΦΑ), is attached to bottom of the chain. Engraved on the back of the pin head is, "Sid McMath. ARK Υ '36. GOVERNOR. 1-11-49." Sidney “Sid” Sanders McMath was born June 14, 1912 in Columbia County, Arkansas. While attending the University of Arkansas, McMath became a member of the Phi Alpha Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In1948, McMath was elected governor. During his four years as governor he was able to add more than 2,000 miles to the state highway system, extended power to all regions of the state, secure funds for the School of Medicine at the University of Arkansas (now the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences), and help to consolidate and integrate schools. The governor’s mansion was completed 1949, and the McMath family became its first residents. He died on October 4, 2003 in Little Rock.
