The Arkansas Military Institute was chartered by the state legislature in 1850. The school was built on Chapel Ridge in Tulip, Dallas County, Arkansas. Students, referred to as cadets, were required to be over 14 years of age and at least 4 feet and 9 inches in height. Classes included Latin, Greek, surveying, math, military science, chemistry, and engineering. After Arkansas seceded from the United States in May of 1861, the school closed permanently.
