DescriptionA first edition copy of "True Grit", a novel written by El Dorado, Arkansas native Charles Portis.Charles Portis (1933- ) was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. He is an American author best known for his 1968 novel "True Grit," which was made into films in 1969 and 2010. The 1969 version co-starred Arkansas native Glen Campbell and John Wayne. Portions of the novel and movie take place in Fort Smith, Arkansas, although neither movie adaptation was filmed in the state. Portis currently resides in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has written five novels -- "Norwood," "True Grit," "Dog of the South," "Masters of Atlantis," and "Gringos." His first novel, "Norwood," was also made into a movie and starred Campbell.

The book cover features an image of a girl in pigtails, a red skirt, sweater, and white collar holding a gun in her right hand and a horse lead in her left hand. The girl is set within a nature landscape with "True Grit" and "A novel by Charles Portis" positioned at the top of the composition. In 1969, the book was adapted into a film version and starred John Wayne and Arkansas native, Glen Campbell. A new film adaptation of "True Grit" was released in 2010.
