DescriptionPackage of correspondence, primarily between People's Bldg. and Loan Assoc. officers and their collection agent and holder of loan (Doyle Henderson) over period from May 14, 1936 thru April 14, 1942. They document attempts during the Depression in the part of creditors to collect debts and debtors to try to make/avoid payments. Not only reflects business and economic climate of Arkansas and Arkansans during the Depression, but is of special interest when compared to package of letters #1984.038.49.3.3 and 1984.038.49.4. Henderson was a Judge from "upper class" and was white. The other packages deal with a middle class Jewish man and a lower class black man. The differences in treatment by the creditor of the 3 parties contrasts wonderfully to show contemporary prejudices since all three parties were in similar circumstances during the same time period.
