DescriptionLobby card from the movie "Darby's Rangers," which is based on the story of Arkansas native William Darby.The 1958 film "Darby's Rangers" is based on the story of Arkansas native William Darby (February 1911-April 1945), who was killed two days before the Germans surrendered in WWII. Darby was killed by an 88mm shell (anti-tank artillery). Darby was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Darby led a group known as "Darby's Rangers," which would eventually evolve into the US Army Rangers. Darby is buried at Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
