DescriptionDiary of Union soldier, Jedediah Allen. Allen enlisted in Bangor, Maine and served with the 2nd Maine Infantry and the 29th Maine Infantry. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana on April 8, 1864. The diary was then captured by Sgt. Albert A. Howell of the 16th Missouri Infantry and carried by Howell until August 1864. Content includes entries about the Great Southern Arkansas and Red River Campaign and the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. Howell enlisted at Mayesville, Arkansas and served in Co. A, 4th Brigade Missouri Volunteers and the 16th Missouri Regiment.

Bound in black leather with a flap that closes over it. A small gold stamp on the flap says Diary 1864.
