DescriptionLetter from Arkansas U.S. Senator James Kimbrough Jones, a Confederate veteran. Jones declines an invitation to the 17th annual reunion of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland in Grand Rapids, Michigan. These invitations were not for general members of the public but were for governors, senators, high ranking military officers, the President and his cabinet.

    September 15, 1885
    Gentlemen,
Upon my return home, I have the pleasure to find your very kind invitation to be present at your 17th reunion and regret exceedingly that it is impossible for me to accept. If it was possible for me to be present, I assure you it would give me great pleasure to form the personal acquaintance of the survivors of those who distinguished themselves and shed luster on America's Army, as members of the Army of the Cumberland and in whose glory I and every American citizen, whether wearing the blue or the gray, has an interest. With the highest esteem & the most cordial good wishes, I am very truly
