DescriptionPanoramic photographic print of the last reunion of Judge Parker's Deputies in 1908. Cal Whitson, 14th from left, is the basis for Rooster Cogburn, a character in the Charles Portis novel, True Grit. Under the image: "Last reunion of Indian Territory Deputy U.S. Marshals in 1908 at Fort Smith, Ark., at which time a memorial service was held for our 65 slain comrades. These are the men who prepared Indian Territory for Oklahoma statehood. The building in the rear was a famous U.S. jail from which one hundred men were taken and hanged."
