DescriptionThomas Hart Benton lithograph titled "Slow Train Through Arkansas." Benton, an artist and writer from Missouri, helped develop the regionalism style of painting in the 1920s. Benton visited Arkansas to sketch and paint throughout his life.
Benton created this lithograph in which he depicted a train stopped while a trainman clears the tracks of cartoonish and underfed local cows.
The use of the slow train image suggested that not only the trains but also the Arkansas people themselves were slow.

The lithograph is based on the 1903 Thomas W. Jackson (1867–1934) book which includes puns, some tall tales, and the prevalent racial and gender stereotypes of its day.

Black and white. Signed in bottom right corner.
