DescriptionGrand Army of the Republic calling card for E.H. Smith, Junior V., Department Commander, Aide De Camp to the Commander in Chief in Dubuque, Iowa. The card lists the various regiments he served in throughout his military career.

E. Howard Smith enlisted in Lyons, Iowa as a private in Co. B of the 1st Iowa Volunteer Cavalry on May 8, 1861. He spent much of the war in and around Arkansas. He mustered out on May 10, 1864 in Little Rock. On October 15, 1864, Smith mustered back in as a Captain of Co. A, 121st U.S. Colored Inf. He continued to serve with this regiment as well as other African-American regiments until 1866. He mustered out of the service as a Captain on April 15, 1866 in DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas.

Calling cards were used socially to signifiy a visit made to a person's home. They were generally left when the home owner was absent.
