    Miss Lizzie Edward
    Dear Friend,
I take this time to try to write you a few scribbling lines. You must forgive me for not writing sooner. I can't excuse myself at all and will just say that it has been pure negligence but I will try and do better in the future. As regards our health we are all well. I say all - I mean the whole family for the boys and Mr. Lambert and myself constitute one family. Mose is well is looks just like he used too [sic]. There is no change in his looks nor his actions. Tell your parents that they have no fears about himd doing anything but what is about right. John Thomas is well and is a good soldier and is the same John. The boys are all well that you know and in fact they are all able for their alowence [sic]. They are all in good spirits and apear [sic] to be well satisfied. They have pleanty [sic] to eat and wear and a comfertable [sic] house to eat and sleep in. They are doing well here and I wish that they could stay here till they come home.
Well, Lizzie, I hardly know what to write that is of much importance to you to read. If I could see you I could tell you a great many things.
(letter stops here and picks up again)

This is the 9th and we are still well. They are all out on drill now and I am writing sometimes. I go to see them drill but not often. There is no one to go with me and I don't like to go by myself. I wish you could be here with me a while. You would see great many things that would apear [sic] strange to you. I know they do to me. I wish you could see the whole force here out on review. That is a nice sight. I have saw them [sic] twice. Well, I heard that Frank Carroll and Mary George was married and that Frank was arrested. Tell Lizzie Thomas that I wrote to her about 2 weeks ago and I am going to write again. I have wrote [sic] to Becca Stagers and got no answer. I have not got a letter from there since I came here. Tell Lizzie Thomas that I want her to write to me soon.
I will close by requesting you to write as soon as you get this so goodbye Lizzie.
    From you ever true friend
    R.J. Lambert
